I bought some old cassette tapes from a yard sale a few weeks ago. The tapes were one of the best-selling Spanish language courses from about ten years ago. (You can visit the Rocket Spanish website here.)

I put them in my cassette player and tried to listen to them, but couldn’t get through the whole program. The course was actually pretty decent, so it wasn’t a matter of quality. I kind of just got bored since I wasn’t really learning anything new; my Spanish was already more advanced than the course’s curriculum.

Here’s an interesting article about a Canadian who goes to Guadalajara, Mexico for a three-week vacation to learn to speak Spanish. She seems to have learned quite a bit and had a lot of fun, although since she has returned home she admits she hasn’t been practicing her Spanish!

In the shrinking world of today’s globalized economy, a monolingual lifestyle is slowly becoming a handicap. Those who speak only English are becoming increasingly marginalized as communication between cultures becomes more important. Being able to speak more than one language is extremely valuable, especially the ability to speak Spanish – the 4th most spoken language.

The reasons for learning another language are many; practical considerations may require you to learn another language, or intellectual curiosity, or even sentimental reasons. Thus it is interesting to have a clear understanding of why you might choose to learn another language, in this case, Spanish!
